This scoping report identifies the main knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to reduce land degradation in Europe, framed through the SOLO Land Degradation Think Tank. It argues that land degradation is a complex, cross-cutting issue involving soil health, ecosystem services, climate change, biodiversity, socio-economic impacts, governance, data availability and farmer support. The report prioritises gaps around identifying cost-effective prevention and restoration measures, understanding links between land degradation and ecosystem services, and assessing social and economic interactions. It concludes that Europe needs better data, integrated monitoring, more inclusive stakeholder engagement, stronger regional planning, and clearer policy and research pathways to support land degradation neutrality and healthier soils by 2050.
