EU Policy landscape on desertification and land degradation

The following sections provide an overview of the international and EU policy framework addressing desertification and drought.

Here, we explain why these policies matter, especially in practice, summarise recent and upcoming milestones, and link to TERRASAFE outputs that support policy debates.

Key international & EU policies

The policy framework relevant to desertification in EU is broad, cutting across different domains of environmental, agricultural, and climate governance.

To make it easier to navigate, we have grouped these policies into six categories: International, Soils, Biodiversity, Agriculture, Climate and Water.

This categorisation reflects the multiple drivers of desertification: unsustainable land use, soil degradation, poor management of water, biodiversity loss, and climate change. It also highlights how policies in seemingly separate domains (e.g., water allocation, biodiversity protection) are interconnected and together shape the resilience of landscapes to drought and land degradation.

Pilot area sites: In addition to examining efforts to combat desertification on an EU-level, policy-related work is also happening in the TERRASAFE pilot areas. Here, we are examining the national and regional policies addressing the drivers and impacts of desertification in their area, and the enablers required to scale up our innovations and ensure their broader adoption. Stay tuned for more findings.
