This is a 2007 national report on combating desertification in Cyprus, produced by the Environment Service, Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment. It outlines the main drivers of desertification in Cyprus, including semi-arid climatic conditions, declining rainfall and rising temperatures, soil erosion, limited water resources, over-extraction of groundwater, unsustainable agricultural and irrigation practices, rural land abandonment, overgrazing, deforestation and forest fires. It also summarises existing and planned measures to address these issues, covering water management, recycled water and desalination, improved irrigation, environmentally friendly farming, afforestation, forest-fire prevention, and the development of a National Action Programme to coordinate future action.
