EU-level water policies
Water management has a strong effect on the likelihood of desertification and land degradation. This makes water-related policies highly relevant to TERRASAFE.
Here, we provide an outline of the EU’s Water Framework Directive.
The Water Framework Directive ensures sustainable water use via River Basin Management Plans.
Relevant objectives & targets:
- Achieve good status for all EU waters by 2027.
- Integrate drought management into national River Basin Plans.
- Require 6-year review cycles for updated water and drought planning.

Pilot area sites: In addition to examining efforts to combat desertification on an EU-level, policy-related work is also happening in the TERRASAFE pilot areas. Here, we are examining the national and regional policies addressing the drivers and impacts of desertification in their area, and the enablers required to scale up our innovations and ensure their broader adoption.
