EU-level climate policies

Climate change caused by humans is a key driver of desertification and land degradation.

Here, we provide an outline of the EU’s ‘Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry’ (LULUCF) regulation.

LULUCF Sets binding targets for carbon removals from land use, land use change, and forestry, ensuring that the land sector contributes to EU climate neutrality.

Relevant objectives & targets:

  • Ensure 310 Mt CO₂ equivalent removals from land use and forestry by 2030.
  • Enhance long-term carbon storage in soils, wetlands, and forests.
  • Maintain and strengthen natural carbon sinks crucial for combating land degradation and desertification.

Pilot area sites: In addition to examining efforts to combat desertification on an EU-level, policy-related work is also happening in the TERRASAFE pilot areas. Here, we are examining the national and regional policies addressing the drivers and impacts of desertification in their area, and the enablers required to scale up our innovations and ensure their broader adoption. Stay tuned for more findings.
