United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
The UNCCD is the only legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.
It includes global commitments on Land Degradation Neutrality, national reporting, and drought resilience.
Find out more about their work by clicking here.
Relevant objectives and targets:
- Achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) by 2030 (SDG Target 15.3).
- Promote drought preparedness and early warning systems.
- Require national reporting every four years on progress towards LDN and drought resilience.
The UNCCD provides a global framework for informing EU action and national reporting obligations on land degradation and drought.

Pilot area sites: In addition to examining efforts to combat desertification on an EU-level, policy-related work is also happening in the TERRASAFE pilot areas. Here, we are examining the national and regional policies addressing the drivers and impacts of desertification in their area, and the enablers required to scale up our innovations and ensure their broader adoption. Stay tuned for more findings.
